FAQ

Does pet insurance cover braces or artificial limbs? Many pet insurance providers reimburse part or all of the cost for custom orthotic and prosthetic devices. We recommend contacting your insurance company directly to confirm coverage details. A prescription or referral from your veterinarian is typically required for reimbursement claims.

Can my dog's brace or artificial limb get wet? Yes, your dog's device is built to handle wet conditions, including rain, swimming, and even underwater treadmill therapy. The interior is lined with soft, closed-cell foam that doesn't absorb water. For best longevity, simply towel off the brace or prosthesis after it gets wet. See our wear-and-care guide for more detailed maintenance tips.

Why do you need a cast instead of just taking measurements? A precise fiberglass cast captures an exact replica of your dog's limb or affected area, allowing us to fabricate a device that fits perfectly and functions optimally. Measurements alone are only approximations and often lead to a less effective, less comfortable fit. The cast ensures the highest level of support, stability, and success for your pet.

What exactly is an orthosis (brace) versus a prosthesis? An orthosis (commonly called a brace) is an external support device that helps stabilize a limb, manage pain, prevent or correct deformities, or aid healing. A prosthesis is an artificial limb that replaces a missing body part (such as a partial or full leg). Both are custom-designed to improve your dog's mobility, comfort, and quality of life.

What materials are used to make my dog's device? We use the same high-grade materials that are used and trusted in human orthotics and prosthetics. These are durable, lightweight, and built to last for many years with proper care. Modular components (straps, pads, joints, tread, etc.) are easily replaceable if they wear out over time, so your investment stays functional long-term.

What is the process like from start to finish? Here's the typical journey:

  1. Consult with your veterinarian (or reach out to PawOpedic directly) to confirm if a custom brace or prosthesis is the right solution for your dog's condition.

  2. We (or your vet) take a fiberglass impression (cast) of the affected area — this is quick and safe.

  3. Using the cast, our board-certified specialists handcraft a fully custom device tailored to your dog's exact anatomy, needs, and lifestyle.

  4. We fit the finished device, walk you through how to put it on/doff it, use it safely, clean it, and monitor progress.

  5. We're here for the long haul — ongoing support is available via phone, email, FaceTime, Zoom, or video uploads so we can help with any questions or minor adjustments.

How long does fabrication take once you receive the cast? Most devices are completed and ready to ship within 5–10 business days after we receive the approved cast. We'll keep you updated every step of the way.

What is your refund policy? Because every brace and artificial limb is individually custom-fabricated specifically for your dog, we do not offer refunds. We stand behind the quality and fit of our work — and our team is committed to making sure your dog gets the perfect device through careful fitting and follow-up support.
